EVAWG Week 2010

Focussed around November 25th (International Day to End Violence Against Women and Girls), End Violence Against Women and Girls Week in Bristol ran from Monday 22nd November to Friday 26th November 2011.

Launch

Monday 22nd November 10am-12pm at the Council House. Speakers:

  • Annie Hudson (Strategic Director for Children Young People and Skills, and Bristol City Council Violence Against Women & Girls Champion)
    Sarah O'Leary (Bristol Rape Crisis)
    Diana Barran (CEO, CAADA)
    DI Marie Wright (Operation Bluestone)
  • Short film: "Our Story" - five women's story of living with and escaping domestic violence and abuse, and forced marriage
  • Display of survivors' art work
  • Pledge your hand print against violence against women and girls, or buy an "I'll Stand Up" badge to support survivor work in Bristol
  • Stalls from agencies across Bristol working to support women and girls

After Work Quiz

Wednesday 24th November 6.00pm at The Full Moon Pub, Stokes Croft

Organised by NHS Bristol and Bristol PCT, join us for a pub quiz with a domestic violence and abuse round, to win prizes! Register your team with laurie.jone@bristol.nhs.net (max 5 people per team)

White Ribbons

Wednesday 24th November all day at Temple Meads Station

Organised and supported by workers from Avon and Somerset Probation, Safer Bristol, Novas Scarman Group, and Relate, men took on Temple Meads Station with ribbons, signs and pledges. £85 was raised for violence against women work in Bristol, and there was fantastic support from the public and the staff at Temple Meads Station, as well as taxi drivers outside.

Candlelit vigil

Thursday 25th November 4.30pm from Next Link offices on Queens Square

Women including victims, survivors, professionals and supporters gathered to walk to College Green, were two cadles were lit in memory of the two women a week killed by partners or ex-partners in the UK.

Hand pledges against violence

All week at City of Bristol Colleges

Students from the City of Bristol College's V Talent programme will be holding stalls where students and staff can pledge their handprint against violence against women and girls. They will also be showing a short film that they organised and created themselves, of workers and victims talking about their experiences of domestic violence and abuse

Bristol University Feminist Society Conference

Saturday 27th November 10.00am - 4.00pm at Bristol Students' Union (free entry)

The Bristol University Feminist Society presents an exciting all day feminism conference with speakers, workshops and a fairtrade cafe lunch...

Other events

  • A stall outside Morrisons Hartcliffe on Monday with information and leaflets, and an unstaffed stall at the Withywood Centre all week
  • Launch of the Safer Bristol "I'll Stand Up" poster campaign, encouraging men and boys to be supportive friends to people who may be experiencing violence and abuse
  • Launch of the NHS "Talking to Friends and Family" leaflet, giving guidance on how to talk to family and friends about domestic violence and abuse, both as a victim/survivor and as a concerned family member.
