Why this toolkit and film?

There are specific activities for children and young people of all ages, from 4 upwards, or even younger.

Activities for younger children focus on positive attitudes and skills for safe friendships; those for young people build on these with more specific knowledge about domestic abuse and safer relationships.

The kit contains a specially created film featuring domestic abuse in a teenage relationship

This can be used with secondary school age children and older.  Specific sections of the film link to specific activities in the tool kit.

All the activities and film are on one handy DVD

This works with classroom interactive whiteboards.  It can also be used on PCs, Macs, lap tops and DVD players.

The toolkit can be used in lots of different settings

These include school, youth work, youth offending, education welfare, refuge activities, behavioural support and other settings with children and young people.

The subject matter fulfils many National Curriculum requirements

These include some for Personal, Health, Social and Citizenship Education (healthy relationships; using the legal system; understanding the role of helping agencies, etc) and also English (using drama skills, analysing film, developing all communication skills, debating topics, etc).

Written and tested by practitioners with years of experience

This includes experience of domestic abuse prevention work in schools and of other work to improve responses to domestic abuse, and in consultation with teachers.

The activities are for ALL children and young people, as they will all be part of the next generation

Not only the future victims and perpetrators of domestic abuse, but also the future friends and colleagues of those victims and perpetrators, and the future police officers, hairdressers, nurses, health visitors, community workers and so on.

The activities and film provide opportunities for children and young people to look at what it means to be a boy or a girl

As well as what they want from a relationship, using a clear understanding of what is illegal and unacceptable behaviour from a partner of friend.
It is designed to equip children and young people with the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to:

  • Recognise the difference between a safe relationship and a potentially abusive one;
  • Know what to do to help themselves, or a friend or someone else in danger of domestic abuse;
  • Choose negotiation and co-operation to resolve conflict;
  • Have a relationship based on respect, equality and trust;
  • Understand the role of different agencies;
  • Know what the law says and what it can do to protect victims.
